Problem

Bad sectors are an unpleasant subject that is even shunned by Wikipedia. The problem is that ones can fade to zeroes. This cannot be detected by writing zeroes to the hard disk like most utilities do. If you really want to detect bad blocks, then you have to write ones.

After using computers with hard disks since 1992 I’ve had several hard disks with bad blocks.

At the end of 2017 I decided to test the hard disks.

Solution

My 10 hard disks support S.M.A.R.T. 4 hard disks have bad sectors of which 3 handled the bad sectors well by reallocating them to spare sectors.
